SodiumVET Hosts SMVMA Veterinary Meeting

This year SodiumVET had the pleasure of hosting the Southern Michigan Veterinary Medical Association Meeting, held at Main Street Stable and Tavern in Southern Michigan. With an outstanding turnout of 30+ doctors and assistants, we were able to talk to the veterinarians personally, get to know their practice and find solutions that work best for them. This event was an amazing opportunity to get to know our veterinarians here in Michigan as well as introduce the digital x-ray industry to those who are less familiar. We firmly believe the digital x-ray sensor is an essential tool in every practice and were happy to discussed the importance of implementing x-ray sensors in their own practice for the specialty of animal dentistry.

The topic of the night was Veterinary Dentistry with Dr. Jamie Berning as the speaker. Dr. Berning graduated in 2011 from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine with a strong passion for dentistry and oral surgery. With a lack of formal dental training in veterinary education, Dr. Berning works to teach veterinarians and students, as well as educate veterinarians on the importance of digital dental radiography within their practice. Dr. Berning in fact uses our digital x-ray sensor, VetDR, in all of her procedures.

Throughout the evening, the veterinarians learned more about dental radiographs and were taught how to interpret radiographs for themselves. The veterinarians were also taught to identify normal versus abnormal pathology for common conditions in dogs and cats. This was a highlight of the night because many of the veterinarians found these learning exercise very engaging and were thrilled to further strengthen their knowledge of interpreting radiographs. Those in attendance found the lecture to be very educational, giving them the ability to better diagnose their patients.

We were also able to talk to veterinarians about our digital x-ray sensor, VetDR. Many of the veterinarians were interested in how VetDR differs from other dental digital x-Ray sensors in veterinary medicine. We were able to confidently inform them on its top tier image quality, high speed image response, VetReady durability and its incredible sensor care plan. The doctors were not only wowed, but convinced in the importance of having a digital x-ray sensor like VetDR in their practice.

A large portion of veterinary medicine is the use of digital x-ray sensors to obtain dental radiographs. Taking dental radiographs in a veterinarian clinic can be used to treat fractured teeth, facial swelling, oral masses, periodontal pockets, maxillofacial trauma, drooling, pre and post-extraction, evaluate missing teeth and so much more. Too many dental procedures are performed on animals without the proper understanding of where the real problem lies. Dental radiographs revealed clinically important findings, and without them numerous unseen problems will go untreated or improperly treated.

We were thrilled to be in attendance. The doctors and ourselves learned so much more about veterinary dentistry and the importance of dental digital x-ray sensors in every veterinary practice. At the end of the night, the veterinarians in attendance found that digital x-ray sensors are absolutely essential for veterinary medicine.

You can not diagnose and treat what you can not see. The importance of incorporating dental X-Rays into your clinic is being shown in many family pets that are not getting the diagnoses and care they need because of the many oral problems going undiagnosed.

Pet owners are paying a great deal of money to purchase and take care of their animals. What most veterinarian’s don’t understand is that their clients want options and knowledge about their pets health. To many pet owners a reasonably priced set of xrays is useful spending especially when it so often leads to diagnosing care that greatly benefits the happiness and health of their pets.

What My Veterinarian Wasn’t Looking For, Didn’t Catch and Could Have Caused My Dog Life Long Problems

I am the owner of SodiumVet and I have a very personal story about one of my newest family members, Hershey. He is a Havanese and Poodle Mix, he loves to play and has been a joy in our home.

HERSHEY IS THE CUTE LITTLE GUY

He has been under the care of a veterinarian since we took him home. He is a member of our family so I took him to a very large and very expensive veterinarian hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. From the beginning we said we want him to be happy and healthy. We took him in for his shots of course, but also we inquired about Veterinary Dental X-rays, they told us they do a thorough oral screening but don’t need to take x-rays. He goes in about once a month, but when he was 7 months old he was going in to be neutered and my fiancee took him in, because he is her baby. I asked her to ask them to please perform dental X-Rays while he would be under sedation for his neuter. The surgical assistant told my Fiancee.

“We really don’t do those things together, I’ll just look in his mouth now”

She said she saw he still had some baby teeth and they would just pull them. My fiancee trusted them and left and called me to give me this information. I called the office and said, please do not pull teeth without taking x-rays. I said I wanted a full mouth series of dental x-rays while he is sedated. They made me feel dumb, they insinuated it would be risky for him because he would be sedated longer, they told me they just wanted to refer us to their dental specialist in house and take x-rays later.

“Why sedate twice just to get x-rays, get x-rays now so the dental specialist has something to work with to treatment plan”, I said.

I was met with incredible irritation and treated like just some annoying client. I was told they are trying to do what’s best for Hershey and I am not doing that. I had to stand my ground and demand dental X-Rays I said if they don’t have the equipment or the knowledge of how to take diagnostic dental x-rays just tell me that. The Veterinarian huffed, said fine they would and basically hung up.

This followed with a series of unpleasant communications that day. The surgical assistant called back asking what email to send the x-rays I gave them my business email and my personal email. They said that only a veterinarian would be able to open the x-rays. I said they could send me jpg or dicom images I didn’t care I have the software to open them.

First email, they sent me these x-rays.

Very Low Quality Image File I was sent

Go ahead and click on that. It hasn’t been reduced for the website. They sent me a 3KB file, and 13 others just like it.

I called and explained what they did, the first person told me it was my fault, that the file was DICOM and only a Veterinarian can open it right.

I explained I own a digital radiography company and this has nothing to do with DICOM since

1. This is a jpg file and

2. The file is 3KB and unless Dicom has a magical compression system added that I never heard about it would not be relevant anyway.

 

Eventually I talked to their office manager and found out that their Midmark provided sensors and their very expensive cloud software, will not export a jpg bigger than 3KB. I told them to please send me the DICOM and I will convert, but that it is silly to have some terrible software that can’t even export a jpg file for you to send to referring doctors.

Once I helped them they sent me these X-rays- cone cut, bad position, and no organization.

 

So now I can SEE why they didn’t want to send me X-Rays, a dental assistant who took these xrays would be sent back to school.

 

Even with these poor quality X-rays I am sure you can see some of the problems my little guy faces. Persistent Deciduous teeth and other issues that if just left alone could lead to serious health risks for the animal.

Hershey has his X-Rays and is going to a specialist in veterinary dentistry to be taken care of. The experience of being a patient simply trying to get some diagnostic dental X-Rays done shows me that the problem isn’t always the patient not being willing to pay for these, it seems like the problem might also be that some staff are simply not trained, not confident or don’t have the equipment to take dental x-rays. I think it is irresponsible to make a client feel stupid for asking for x-rays if the truth is that you simply don’t feel comfortable taking them and are scared to admit that.

SodiumVet gets ready for any situation

The SodiumVet staff here at Sodium Systems firmly believes that we need to do everything we can to be able to help in any possible situation.

Our staff are now American Heart Association CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens Trained. This gives us tools to help our co-workers, our friends, loved ones and strangers on the street survive an emergency situation with the best odds of recovery.

Our training was performed by our very own Joe Jelasic, an AHA Licensed BLS Instructor. We are very proud to have this level of knowledge and expertise in our office and would be happy to provide this training on site to you and your staff.

Providing the best possible diagnostic imaging for veterinary dental care is our mission, but having the tools to help save another person’s life and give the best aid possible should be everyone’s mission.

As one of the owners of Sodium Systems, I personally feel that going through this training with my staff was an important use of our time. I now feel that I personally can perform very high level CPR as well as recognize and respond to many other emergent needs such as stroke, heart attack, choking, broken bones, lacerations and more. It costs time and money to do a training and make sure you have the right medical kit on site for most situations, but if you don’t take these steps to prepare, the personal cost to you could be much greater. I value all of my staff and find that they are almost like family to me.If they need urgent medical assistance, my CPR and first aid training is going to give me the tools to make sure they have the best possible outcome.

SodiumVet Focuses On Durability

The digital X-Ray sensor is one of the most expensive and delicate components of your digital diagnostic setup for Veterinarian Dentistry. Most of the sensors used for VET Dental are just renamed sensors intended for use in humans. Here at Sodium Vet we have worked with many different Veterinarians to develop special housings  and cases to greatly increase the durability of our Vet sensors and better meet the needs of our Veterinarians.

The reason why hard cases are not used in human dental radiography is because of the limited space inside the human mouth.

Our intention with our sensors is to provide a hard case that is very durable against accidental damage but does not impede the diagnostic quality of the sensor.

The Importance of Veterinary Dentistry

Even when a pet may otherwise have a reportedly healthy outlook, seemingly eating and drinking normally and even have a pleasant demeanor, periodontal disease could be lying just under the surface and could lead to life-threatening diseases. The most common clinical condition among cats and dogs is periodontal disease. In fact, 85 percent of all pets have periodontal disease by the time they are 3 years of age. Introducing a regular and thorough examination routine into the life of a pet could prevent damage to their internal organs. With a dental exam, most of these escalations could be easily prevented before it’s too late.

Promoting dental health is an important measure to promoting the overall health of the pet. It can also be a way to diagnose other health issues a pet may be experiencing. A pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by a veterinarian to check for early signs of a problem and to keep a pet’s mouth clean and healthy. Because most dental diseases occur below the gumline where you can’t see it, a thorough exam will include taking radiograph images to see the precursors of periodontal disease.
